Turning 21. . .

My eyes were fixed upon its long black finger dancing to a rhythmic tune.

“Tick…tick..tick”

Soon it touches the bolded number and chimes resound from within.

12 times altogether.

“21, and the world is yours”.

I recall those words from the many faces of those who’ve passed this stage I’ve just stepped upon.
I'm officially 21.
I felt nothing.. I still looked the same, felt the same and still facebooking.

I was still the “me” from the one a minute ago, a year younger and a category different altogether.

Ya, I’ve officially branched into adulthood.

Gosh I sound so old! By all means, I still prefer being acknowledged as “girl”.

Thank you very much.

Now for most countries, being 21 grants you access to activities that were never legal when you were 20 and below. What most people celebrate is the freedom to enter certain pubs and the grandness of walking towards to counter, holding a beer at hand fearlessly, bidding farewell to sneaking bottles of booze in yester-years.

While many exalt the drinking-liberty, I am also reminded that turning 21 gives you the rights to vote during political elections, appointing the government of your choice. The future of the Malaysia kinda falls into your hands now and would you be part of Malaysia’s downfall or revival? Well, it all depends on where you place that “X”.

Politics and booze and serious stuff aside, hitting big number 21 in Chinese Cultures also means receiving that “key of liberty” from parents!! Which I received none. Mention “liberty” and they will give you that “What liberty?” look of innocence. Sigh. A mummy/daddy’s girl shall always be a girl in their hearts right?

The female species dread the coming of this day. As many advised me before “Time flies once you’re 21! Soon you’ll start work, then you’ll get married. So cherish your teens!”

Though you may catch me ranting on being old from time to time, for me, life’s only just begun.
And I pray that once you reach this “shall not be named” age, you would utilize your ‘freedom’ wisely.

And all you above 21, Wei-Li has joined the “I eat more salt than you” squad! =P
